Banana Water for Tired Houseplants After Winter

Many houseplants look tired after winter: leaves lack vigour, new shoots are scarce and flowers are slow to appear. For years, a plant enthusiast from England has relied on an exceptionally simple homemade remedy containing just two ingredients to revive her indoor jungle each spring - and the same approach can easily be used in homes in Germany.

A spring refresh for tired houseplants

Following the darker months, many potted plants are effectively under strain. They receive less light, central heating dries out the air, and watering can be either too frequent or insufficient. As a result, growth slows, leaves become limp and the plant generally appears weak.

March, when daylight hours begin to increase again, is an especially good time for a fresh start. Rather than immediately reaching for a strong liquid fertiliser from the garden centre, the journalist mentioned above uses a gentle homemade nutrient solution from the kitchen: water infused with banana skins, often called “banana water”.

“The idea: every time you water, a small, gentle portion of nutrients reaches the roots, suited to the slow start of spring.”

She notices the effect particularly with familiar houseplants including orchids, spider plants, peace lilies and snake plants. They all receive the same mixture, although how often it is applied varies according to the plant and the season.

Why banana water benefits plants

Banana skins have long been a familiar recommendation among hobby gardeners. They contain mainly potassium, as well as smaller quantities of magnesium and other trace elements. When the peel is left to soak in water for several days, some of these minerals dissolve into it.
